I confess I’m a bit of a Donna Hay wanna be. Donna Hay is the Australian version of Martha Stewart…but so much better! She’s a Food Stylist gone wild with talent, creativity and culinary skill. I have spent the last 25 years working as a Food Stylist and this is the one magazine that makes me giddy when it arrives in my mailbox. These publications get my creative juices going and my culinary vibes itching to be in the kitchen. The recipes, the props used for photos, the style, the teamwork; its all inspiring. What I appreciate about DH is that she recognizes the talented team on her staff and will often take you behind the scenes to show you just what it takes and how much work goes into one production. Kudos, DH!
I have introduced so many of my clients to her that I think her subscriptions have doubled. If a client asks for ‘The Donna Hay look’ I know exactly what that means. I am secretly wishing that one day I will get to work with her and her team on a photo shoot, but I would settle for a free subscription for life. Who am I kidding? I want to work with her in person in the land down under and shop for amazing props to my hearts content!
An added perk is that our countries have opposing seasons. I just received the spring issue. For me, it gives me hope that spring will be here again, especially as the days get shorter and colder heading into our winter. I can also plan ahead for the seasons to come, because in my business you have to prepare in advance. I keep pumpkins in my cold garage all winter, because I will inevitably get a call for one in March, or we photograph spring menus in late winter, or Christmas in July, you get the picture.
Every recipe I have tried has been fantastic and well tested. I may refer you to one of her recipes in future blogs or talk about the ‘Donna Hay Look’. So, for those of you who have not heard of DH, I wanted to introduce you to one of my favorite products and the person who inspired it. You can find separate issues at local book stores, too. To learn more go to www.donnahay.com. While you are there, check out her annual kids magazine. Its over the top with fantastic ideas for kid’s parties and cakes. And tell them I sent you! Maybe I should start a subscription / mileage club that earns points to Australia!
